The Giver - Rules

In Jonas's community there are many rules that the citizens must follow.  Using only the first two chapters of The Giver:

  1. List at least five rules that Jonas and his community must live by and give them your own title or name.
  2. Copy an exact quote from the first two chapters of The Giver for each rule in your list which shows where the author has mentioned itInclude the page number for the quote.
  3. Explain in one or two complete sentences what the rule means in your own words (Don't tell why you like it/don't like it).
  4. Tell what the advantages of each rule could be in a community.  How could this rule benefit your life or world?
Do all your answers in complete sentence answers  in Microsoft Word and check it with WORD TALK.  Use all your COPS skills and include as many dressups as you need to make your answers as interesting to read and as descriptive as possible.

  1. 1)Voice Mayhem Rule: The citizen’s have to listen to whatever the speakers say.
Pg: 2, the voice on the speaker said…. The advantage of this rule is that people don’t have to make choices there self’s.

2)Shortage Child Rule: Every year a group of fifty babies’s come and each family gets one girl and one boy but they don’t get to chose who. We knew of course we would get or second child. Pg: 12. The advantage of the rule is the elders watch you closely and they know what baby would suit you best.

    3) Fly High or Get Removed Rule: No plane can drive over the community.
Pg: 3, No planes were allowed to fly over the community. The advantage of this rule is that if a plane were to crash it would not crash into the town.

4)Ceremony of Twelve Rules: The ceremony of twelve is when you get a job but you don’t get to chose it. Pg: 18: After my Ceremony of Twelve, I missed my childhood. The advantage of this rule is that the elders watch you closely and they mostly know what job would suit you best.

5)Tell Me You Feelings or Else: Every night the children have to tell their parents their feelings. Pg: 5, we tell our parents our feelings each evening. The parents get to know all about your day.

  2. 1. The no saying the word release rule. If you say she should be released and someone hears you will be talked to very strictly and be given a warning the second time you say it you will be released. “Even the children were scolded if they used the term (released) lightly at play.” Pg.3
The rule means that if you say that is it Asher you’re released you will be talked to very strictly about what you said.
The advantages about this rule are that there would not be so many put downs. I t would benefit my life because sometimes I get told that that is bad and how did you miss the net in hockey.

    2. The no bike rule until your nine. You have to be at least nine years of age to be given a bike or bike lessons. “The children all received their bikes at age 9 they were not allowed to ride bicycles before then.”pg.13
If you are eight years of age and younger you are not allowed to ride a bicycle or get bike lessons from older brothers or sisters.
The advantages of this rule would be that you would probably wouldn’t get hurt at a younger age by falling off your bike or it toppling over on top of you. When I was younger I use to wipe out on my bike and get hurt on my bike a lot.
    3. Kid name rule. When you are given a child you don’t get to make up its name the Elders do. “But I’d been wondering and wondering what her name would be. New child number 23 Lily.”pg.12
If you apply and it gets approved you are given a child but the Elders choose the child’s name.
The advantages of this rule would be that if your parents had troubles naming you would get named by someone else. The advantages of this rule are that some parents have troubles naming their children.
    4. You don’t get to choose your wife rule. The Elders choose your wife they watch you and see how you act around certain people. “Most people on the night crew had not even been given spouses.” Pg.8
The elders watch how you act around girls or boys and who you get along with well and that is who you’re spouse is.
The advantages of this rule are that sometimes people don’t like who they are married to so they get in a divorce so in this community the elders choose who you’re wife is. It would help to lower the divorce rate because in this community the elders watch and see who you get along with well.
    5. 2 children rule. You are only allowed 2 children and the Elders choose
Them for you. “ Lily you know the rules two children one male-one female.pg.8”
If you apply and it gets approved by the elders you will be given a female if you already a male or you will be given a male if you already have a female.
The advantages of this rule are that some people get 2 girls and they wanted a boy and a girl so in this book it is mandatory to have a male and a female.

  3. 1. Bike Rule: You are not a loud to have a bike until you are the age of eight. “Sometimes, if it was a very important rule-unlike the one governing the age for bicycles.” Page 14 I think the rule means that you are not allowed having bike tell you are 9 because you could hurt yourself. I think the advantages of the bike rule is that you will not get hurt until your nine probably
    2. Birthday Rule: Your Birthday is on the month of December
“Each December, all new children in the previous year turned one.” Page 11 I think this rule means that everybody in the community has a birthday on December and every December you get something new I think the advantage of this rule is that you do not need to get presents for anyone and there is a ceremony.
    3. Release Rule. If you do something bad or something embarrassing you will be released. “The pilot had been trying to make his way before he noticed. NEEDLESS TO SAY, HE WILL”. BERELEASED.” Page 2 I think this rule means that if you do something bad or embarrassing or break the rules you will be released or have a warning. I think the advantage of this rule is that you will not have bad people in your community.
    4. No Name Rule: When you are given a child you cannot pick its name.
“New child Twenty-three, the namer had read. “Lily” Page 13
I think this rule means that when you get your child your child you cannot picks it name. I think the advantage of this rule is that if you cannot pick a name for your baby you do not have to the elders do
    5. Tell your feelings: Every night you have to tell your feelings
“Who wants to be the first tonight, for feelings?” Page 4
I think this rule means that every night you have to tell your feelings to your family and you family has to tell them to you. I think the advantage of this rule is that you let out your tress

  4. The Giver Rules
1You can only have 2 children 1 girl 1 boy. No more children rule. “Two children-one male one female to each family unit”. Page 8. It could help the world because it would lower down the population.
2You don’t pick your spouse. Spouse assignment. “Most of the people on the night crew had not given a spouse because they lacked somehow the essential capacity to connect to others which was required for the creation of a family unit”. Page 8. It might lower down the divorces because they could look longer and they would now everyone.
3When you turn 9 you get your bike.9 bike. “She became a Nine that year and got her bicycle”. Page 13. When your younger it makes you walk so when you are older you will walk more.
4You don’t pick your babies name. You can’t pick the name. “But I’d been wondering and wondering what her name would be”. Page 12. So the baby knows its name write away.
5You cannot say release. Can’t say release. “Jonas had done it once, had shouted at his best friend , That’s it Asher you’re released.” Page 3. So you do not say bad words.

  5. No flying over the community.
    Page 1
Quote, “Leave your bicycles where they are.”
No planes are allowed to fly over the community. If planes ever do all the people of that community have to go into the nearest building.
    Lets tell feelings.
    Page 4
Quote, “Who wants to be first tonight, for feelings?”
At every evening meal each family will sit down and tell there feelings to each other.
    The family.
    Page 8
Quote, “You know the rules, Two children - one male, one female - to each family unit.”
Each family gets two children. The children have to be a male and a female.

    The bicycle.
    Page 13
Quote, “She became a nine that year and got her bike.”
When you become a nine you get your bicycle no matter what. At a ceremony you would get your bike.

    The release.
    Page 3
    Quote, “ Asher your released.”
You are not allowed to say the word released in their community because it means to be sent away from the community that they are in.

  6. The giver

1.Government’s job is where the government chooses a job for you. Quote “it was a secret selection, made by the leaders of the community, the comitee of elders.” page 15. The advantages are you do not have to type a ressamay and you do not have to meet all those people

2.Double kids is where you are only allowed one boy and one girl. Quote ”Two children one male and one female to each family unit” page 8. The advantages are you do not have to do as much work as parents who have three or more kids. My parents have an advantage because all they have are two daughters.

3.Feelings to tell is where you have to tell your feelings every night to your family at dinner. Quote “it was one of the rituals, the evening telling of feelings.” This is on page 4. The advantages are after you tell your family your feelings they can help you and tell you what to do and what not to do. My family always tells what happened today so they can help me through any problem.

4.Nine bikes is where you are only allowed to get your bike when you are nine. Quote “The children all receive their bicycles at nine; they were not allowed to ride bicycles before then” That is on page 13. The advantage, if you were younger and you try to ride a bike you might fall off and really hurt yourself. It would be easier for my sister because she needs help sometimes on her bike, but she is getting better everyday.

5.Back to December is where you have a big ceremony where all the ones, twos, threes, fours and so on up to twelve, but twelves is a big ceremony because you get your job then and it is all nerve racking. Quote “But it’s the ceremony I am apprehensive about. It’s almost December.” Page 9. It is an advantage because then you do not have to delay any parties or miss them and you are all the same age at the same time. Plus then some people will not pick on you and how old you are.

  7. The Rules

    1. “The 4 person family.” You can only have 1 boy, one girl and a mother and father. Page 8: Lily," Mother reminded her, smiling, "you know the rules. "Two children, one male and one female to each fam-ily unit. It was written very clearly in the rules. “This is a quote.” This means that you cannot have any pets or any other family member or any other siblings. The advantage is that so the community won’t be so over populated.
    2. “The random spouse.” You don’t pick your spouse, the government picks for you. Page 8: Most of the people on the night crew had not even been given spouses because they lacked, somehow, the essential capacity to connect to others, which was required for the creation of a family unit. This means some people didn’t have a choice of who they will marry to, so the government picked their spouse. The advantage is that you will have a better spouse because the people that been watching you for ages will have a better choice.
    3. “Project for you.” They give you a random project for life. Page 9: Lily looked up, her eyes wide. “The Ceremony of 12,” she whispered in an awed voice. Even the smallest children, Lily’s age and younger, knew that it lay in the future for each of them. “This is a quote.” This means that you don’t pick your job, the government picks their spouse. The advantage is that they know more that you do.
    4. “Listen to the speaker”. You must follow the directions that the speaker says. Page 2: Immediately, the rasping voice through the speakers had said, “Leave your bicycles where they are.” “This is a quote.” This means that you will have to follow the directions the speakers. The advantage is it will keep you safe.
    5. “Stealing from a baby”. When you are an 8, your comfort objects is took away. Page 18: “Lily” her mother said fondly, “you’re very close to being an 8 and your comfort object will be taken away. It will be recycled to the younger children. “This is a quote.” This means that your comfort object so you can get use to sleep without it. The advantage is that you will be sleeping without the comfort object so they won’t be so addicted to it.

  8. The Giver Rules
    1. The first rule I knew was the two child per family rule and only a girl and a boy could go with 1 family I would call that two children per family.
    2. Page: 8 “Two children-one male, one female-to each family unit.”
3.To me this rule means that each family will only receive two children one female and one male because they don’t want to community to become to popular.
    4. The advantages of this rule would be that you don’t need to go through pain in giving birth and they give you a name for your child so you don’t need to think of one yourself. This rule could benefit my life or world by not making people give birth if they don’t want to and they give you a creative name.
    1. The next rule you get a bike when you are 9 years of age and I would call your bike at 9.
    2. Page: 13 “It was one of the few rules that was not taken very seriously and was almost always broken.
    3. This rule to me means that they think kids at 8 or under are too young to use a bike so you get one at 9.
    4. The advantages of this rule is that if you get your bike at 9 they may think you are ready and you won’t get hurt. The benefit of this rule is that they are considered for you safety and don’t want you to get hurt.
1.Next rule was you have to go inside if a voice goes over that speaker and tell you that a blimp flying too low and you can come back out when a voice over a speaker says you can I would call that duck in cover.
    2. Page: 2 “LEAVE YOUR BICYCLES WHERE THEY ARE.”
    3. This rule to means that you are told what to do when something mysterious happens that you have not seen.
    4. the advantages of this rule is that they are considered for your safety if something bad or mysterious comes into their community they are prepared. The benefit of this rule is they want to check out the mysterious objects before anyone gets hurt.
    1. Other rule was your job gets picked for you when you are 12 and I would call that one picker.
2.Page: 9 “The Ceremony of Twelve,”
    3. I think this rule means that the give you your job at twelve because they need more workers faster cause maybe lots of people are retiring.
    4. the advantages of this rule is when they pick your job for you it is a surprise and you get to be a adult at 12 and practice early it seems. The benefit of this rule is you may or may not be excited for you job.
    1. Other rule is you have to share your feeling at the dinner table and I would call that sharing feelings.
    2. Page: 10 “I’m glad you told us of your feelings”
    3. To me this rule means that you share each other’s feeling to your family to get it out of your head.
4.the advantages of this rule is you can let go of your thoughts and tell others what you feel. The benefit of this rule is you can tell your feelings to others and not feel guilty.

  9. Two gender children - You are only allowed two children and they have to be female and male.
“Two children – one male, one female – to each family unit.” Page 8.
This rule means you have to have two children. They have to be female and male.
The advantages are that the population of people won’t grow much and there will be enough food for everyone. The population won’t get to big.

Left over food – you are not allowed to bring food back from school.
“The only thing that happened was the announcement later that evening over the speaker, the announcement that singled him out without using his name, that caused both of his parents to glance meaningfully at his desk where the apple still lay.” Page 25.
This rule means that you are not allowed to take food from school home.
The advantage is the rule makes you eat your food. You don’t want to take food back from school because then you’re not eating your food.

Bikes to ride – you have to ride a bike to school when your 9 years old.
“LEAVE YOUR BICYCLES WHERE THEY ARE.” Page 2.
This rule means you have to ride a bicycle to school when your 9 years old.
The advantage is that you can ride a bike instead of walking.
It is more fun to ride a bike then walk.

No planes – no planes over the community.
“He had never seen aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community.” Page 1.
This rule means no planes over the community incase the plane
    crashes or something like that.
The advantage is planes can crash in to the community and lots
of people can die. Lots of people with get injured and trust me,
    you don’t want that.

Jobs for you – the community picks your job when you are 12 years old.
“The Ceremony of Twelve,” she whispered in an awed voice. Page 9.
This rule means that the community picks your job at “The Ceremony of Twelve.”
The advantage is you might pick the wrong job for yourself and
that would be bad. If you picked the wrong job then you are
    stuck.

    1. Two kids policy: Each family is only allowed one male and one female. “Two children – one male, one female – to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules.” Page 8. This rule means that each individual family unit is only allowed one male and one female. The advantage is that the community will not be over populated. If there were to many people in the community, then all the food would run out.
    2. Bike policy: When children are nine, they get their own bicycle to ride on. “The children all received their bicycles at nine; they were not allowed to ride bicycles before then.” Page 13. This rule means the children 9 or over will be able to ride a bike, but children younger than 9 are not allowed to ride a bike. The advantage is that children under the age of 9, will not get injured as much. It is more entertaining to ride a bike than walk.
    3. Stuffy policy: Children over the age of 8 would have their stuffed animal taken away from them. “But her father had already gone to the shelf and taken down the stuffed elephant which was kept there.” Page 18. This rule means that children under the age of 8, will get their stuffed animals taken away from them. The advantage is that other baby’s can get to use the stuffy that the kid before them used. The world would be full of stuffies, if we didn’t have a restriction.
    4. Speaker policy: You must listen to the speaker when they say something to the community. “IMMEDIATELY, the rasping voice through the speakers had said. LEAVE YOUR BICYCLES WHERE THEY ARE. Instantly, obediently, Jonas had dropped his bike on its side on the path behind his family’s dwelling.” Page 2. This rule means that when the speaker is speaking, you make sure that you are listening to what the speaker is saying. The advantage is that if there was a fire, the speaker can let everybody know about it. The people would know if there was a problem.
    5. No Flying policy: Nobody should ever fly over the community. “He had never seem aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community.” Page 1. This rule means that nobody should ever fly over the community. The advantage is that if a plane crashes, then everyone will die. A lot of people would die, so that’s why nobody should fly over the community.

  11. 1) The parents) the parents at birth are only allowed to have one baby boy and one baby girl at birth then the government takes the baby away tom another parent that is good to take care of it.
    2) The plane) the planes aren’t allowed to fly over the community because the people in town might be frightened if the plane fly’s over the town.
    3) Your Spouse) The government picks your spouse for you they see if you are good for them and then the government chooses it then they are stuck with them forever.
    4) The job they pick) the government picks the job for the people and they see what they are good at doing then the person does it.
    5) The stuffed animal)when the baby is born the government gives the baby a stuffed animal they sleep with it forever and when they are seven the government takes the stuffed animal away.

  12. 1. These are some of the rules mentioned in the first and second chapter of the book. I named this rule the two children for one family rule. This is when members of the community are only allowed two children in the family (a male and a female).
The author’s quote: “Maybe we could even keep him.” Pg. #8
The advantages to this rule is that, since every family will only have two children, the community would know how much resources to supply and each family would have enough resources to live comfortably. Also, each family would not need to worry about how many children they need to take care of and the gender of the child because each family would already know. The benefits of having this rule in the world are that people could control the population of the world and families would have enough resources because of the controlled population.

    2. I call the next rule the no decision of job rule. This is when the members are not allowed to decide themselves what job they will have when they are older, but their job is determined by an observation of another member.
The author’s quote: “Because I was already fairly of what my assignment was to be.” Pg. #15
The advantages to this rule is that if you had a difficult time trying to figure out what job you wanted to have, you could have your job determined by an observation of another person so you would not need to worry. If you were concerned about picking the wrong job, then you would not have to be stressed because someone else would pick it for you. The benefits of having this rule in the world are that there would be more jobs and opportunities for people, and people could also have their job chosen by someone they could trust.

    3. I have called this next rule the no stuffed animal policy. This rule is used after children are handed comfort objects (stuffed animals) when they are born, and are taken away when the child turns eight years old.
The author’s quote: “you’re very close to being an Eight, and when you’re and Eight, you’re comfort object will be taken away.” Pg. #18
The advantages of having this rule are that children would not have to rely and depend on having a comfort object when they are older and it would teach the children independence. The benefits of having this rule in the world are that it would teach children how to be independent and to obey rules.

    4. Adults of the community are not allowed to choose the spouse that they are going to live with because someone else will pick which person they will be paired up with. I call that rule the chosen spouse rule.
The author’s quote: “Most of the people on the night crew had not even been given spouses because they lacked, somehow, the essential capacity to connect to people, which was required for the creation of a family unit.” Pg. #8
The advantages of having the rule is that if someone did not know what kind of person they would want in their spouse, they could have somebody chose their spouse for them. When the person had their spouse chosen and it was a good match, it would help the person connect with the spouse and other people. The benefits of having this rule in the world are that it would help people find a suitable spouse and them bond better with their family.

    5. I named this last rule the family feelings share this rule is used every evening when all families will share how their day was and their feelings and emotions about their day. The author’s quote: “Who wants to be the first tonight, for feelings?” Pg. #4
The advantages of having the rule is that it would help make the community more peaceful because when someone shared how their day was, and if it was bad the family would know to deal with it. Also, the rule helps make people feel better when the talk about their day because it puts less stress on them. The benefits of having this rule in the world are that people would be in a safer environment and the world would be a better place. The rule would also help bring families closer when they shared their feelings together.

  14. The Giver Rules
    1. You have to talk about your feelings at dinner time. The Feelings Rule. “It was one of the rituals, the evening telling of feelings”. Page 4.
    b) I think that this quote means that every person who is eating at the dinner table must express his or her feelings. They should express their feelings one at a time so everyone can be heard.
    c) An advantage of this rule could be if your having trouble other can help you fix the problems.
    2. You can only have a bike when your 9 years old and ride a bike when your 9 years old. The Bike Rule. “The children all received their bicycles at Nine.” Page 13.
    b) The quote means to me that they can only receive their bike when they tern nine years old.
    c) An advantage of only being able to get a bike at nine years old is so kids under nine that don’t know how to ride a bike wont get hurt.
    3. If you do three things that are crimes you get kicked out of the community. The Banish Rule. “The rules say that if there's a third transgression, he simply has to be released." Page 9.
    b) The quote means to me that if you are bad and you commit three crimes you will get kick out of the community.
    c) An advantage of having this rule is that you will have no criminals in your community.

    c) An advantage of having this rule is you most likely wont have any trouble with their spouse.

  15. • You’re only allowed two children per household.
“Lily,” mother reminded her, smiling, “you know the rules.” Two children – one male, one female – to each family unit. P. 8
I think it is not the best idea because what if you want more children.
    • All the nines got their bicycles then and they couldn’t get them any younger.
“The children received their bicycles at Nine; they were not allowed to ride bicycles before then.” P. 12
Where we live anybody can ride a bike when ever, so I think that it is very unusual.
    • It was against the rules for a plane to fly over their community.
“He had never seen aircraft so close, for it was against to rules for Pilots to fly over the community.” P.1
This rule means that the people are trying to be safe so then know one gets hurt.
    • They have to tell their felling at dinnertime.
“Who wants to be the first to tell their feelings?” P.4
Sometimes you just want your feelings to keep to yourself you shouldn’t have to tell all your feeling only if you want it to get off your shoulders.
    • You’ll be released if you don’t follow the rules.
“NEEDLESS TO SAY, HE WILL BE RELEASED.”
I think you should die when you have to die unless you’re sick and you need to be released.

  16. 1) The five rules in this book are that you can only have 1 boy and, one girl and a mother and father.
    “Lilly”, “mother reminded her, smiling,
This rule is alright you don’t have to hassle very muck with two kids
    2) You have to tell your feelings. It’s a family ritual.
“Who wants to be the first to tell you feelings” page 8.
It’s not good because maybe they want to keep their feeling.
    3) There is something called a release. You will be talked to seriously if you use that word
    “That’s it Asher! You’re released”.
It’s good in their community because it shows that you’re not allowed to use some of the words.
    4) You are prohibited to fly planes over the community you will be released
    “HE WILL BE REALEASED”
I think it’s no use to have this rule because they could mistake an own jet for a fighter pilot.
    5) You have to apologize if you’re late.
    “We accept your apology”
It’s good because it shows you that you have to be on time

    d. I think the advances of these rule would be the population would not be so big if we had this rule.

  18. 1) Voice Mayhem Rule: The citizen’s have to listen to whatever the speakers say.

  19. 1. The bike rule: You are not aloud to have a bike till you are 9 years old.
Quote: “I have been teaching her how to ride mine, even though technically I wasn’t supposed to.” Page 13.
In my words this rule means they don’t think you are not mature enough to get a bike.
The advantage of this rule is you still have lots of time to practice. The benefit is that you learn patience.

    2. Share your feelings: After each day you have to share your feelings.
Quote: “ I felt angry this afternoon”. In my words it means that they want to know how there day went. The advantage of this rule is that if you tell someone you had a bad day then maybe that person could help you.

    3. Stuffed animal rule: you get a stuffed animal when you are born and the they take it away when you are 7.
Quote: “Lily’s were soft, imaginary creatures.” Page 19. In my words this rule means that when they take it away it means you have to get more mature. The advantage of this rule is you at least have the stuffed animal for 7 years and it could get old. The benefit is that sometimes you have to let go.

    4. Birthdays: Every ones birthday is on December, but they don’t know what day.
Quote: “Each December brings such changes”. Page 11
In my words this means that every day in December they have a little party. The advantage of this rule is that your whole family knows when your birthday is. The benefit of this rule is that sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do.

    5. The wife: The man cannot pick his wife, the elders do.
Quote: “Of course the Elders are so careful in their observations and selections.” Page15. In my words this means that the elders know secretly that that’s who you were going to marry anyway. The advantage of this rule is the elders probably choose very wisely. The benefit of this rule is sometimes you don’t want to be partnered up with someone you don’t like but you just have to deal with it, and maybe you will end up loving that person.

Biker: at age 9 you are allowed to start riding a bike, Page #14 Q: His father continued. "So I watched and cheered when my sister, Katya, became a Nine and removed her hair ribbons and got her bicycle,"
Comforter: you must give up your comfort item at age 8, Page #18 Q: "Lily, you're very close to being an Eight, and when you're an 8 , your comfort object will be taken away. It will be recycled to the younger children. You should be starting to go off to sleep without it."

Twelve: at age 12 you must be assigned a job, Page #9, Q: "I'm feeling apprehensive," he confessed "Why is that, son?" His father looked concerned."I know there's really nothing to worry about," Jonas explained, "and that every adult has been through it. I know you have, Father, and you too, Mother. But it's the Ceremony that I'm apprehensive about. It's almost De¬cember." Lily looked up, her eyes wide. "The Ceremony of Twelve," she whispered in an awed voice.
Feeling: you must tell your feelings at the dinner table, Page #4-9 Q: "Who wants to be the first tonight, for feelings?" Jonas's father asked, at the conclusion of their evening meal. It was one of the rituals, the evening telling of feelings.

Piloting: no planes are allowed to fly over the community because if one does they know to be worried about it and hide, Page #1 & 2 Q: Frightened was the way he had felt a year ago when an unidentified aircraft had over flown the community twice. He had seen it both times. He had seen the sleek jet, almost a blur at its high speed, go past, and a second later heard the blast of sound that followed. Then one more time, a moment later, from the opposite direction, the same plane. At first, he had been only fascinated. He had never seen aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community.
4.) Page 14: in Canada you are allowed to ride bike at any age so you are not as experienced. In “The Giver”, you must be nine to ride a bike. So you will be more experienced. If you start riding a bike at any age you can fall and get hurt so you will not know what to do and it might hurt more since you are just laying there not knowing how to make the pain go away. When you are nine you will know what to do when you fall and since your body is stronger it might not hurt as much.
Page #18: when you are young it will help you to get to sleep but when you get older it will help you to see that there is nothing to be scared of at night.
Page #9: at age twelve you are a tween and on your way to being a responcible teenager so it is the perfect time to at least think about a job.
Page #4-9i think it is a good idea to tell your feelings because it gets it out of your head and other people can comfort you.
Page #1-2: it is a good idea because you know to be scared or hide when a plane comes about.

Two kid operation: “two children one male one female. Only two kids per family unit”. pg 8 I believe that this is so they don’t over populate. The advantage of this rule is the parents only have 2 kids to look after.
Mythical thing: “he acted like an animal? Neither child knew what the word meant exactly”. No kid knows what an animal is. pg 5 I think this is a safety issue. The advantage is no pets.

  26. 1.Two kids each family rule:
    Page 8
“Two children – one male, one female – to each family unit.”

What this rule means to me is that each family unit has to have a girl and a boy. If they have two of the same gender, one of them will be released and they will be given another child that is a different gender.

    2.The bike rule:
    Page 13
“The children all received their bicycles at nine. They were not allowed to ride bicycles before then.”

What this rule means to me is that children have to ride a bike at nine or it will be against the rules. I also think that they won’t be able to experience life as a kid.

    3.Listen to the speaker rule:
    Page 2
“Leave your bicycles where they are.” Instantly, obediently, Jonas had dropped his bike on its side on the path behind his family’s dwelling.

What this rule means to me is that if you don’t listen to the speaker, then you could get released.

    4.Age group rule:
    Page 4
“All of the elevens were excited about the event that would be coming up soon.”
What this rule mean to me is that when you are a certain age, you are in a age group of your age and you have to be in that group so that chief elder can know how old kids are and be organized.

5.No flying planes over the community rule:
    Page 1
“He had never seen an aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for pilots to fly over the community.”

What this rule means to me is that they can’t fly over the community because they don’t want people to attack the community and hurt someone or they don’t want people to start a war in the community.

  27. The Giver Rules
Two gender children. The family has to have 2 children – only allowed one female and one male.
“Two children– one male, one female– to each family unit.” Page 8
Each family in the community is only allowed 2 children- that should be one male and one female.
This advantage for the community is that each person that is not married, would have a spouse.
Eight years of a comfort object. The community will take your comfort object when the children are at age 8.
“Lily,” her mother said fondly, “you’re very close to being an Eight, and when you’re an Eight, your comfort object will be taken away.” Page 18
Every child in the community has a comfort object. The comfort object is given at the nurturing center.
The disadvantage is that child might refuse to give it to the newborn, causing trouble.
I don’t pick my job rule. The community gives jobs, jobs that you don’t pick, after the ceremony of 12.
“After the ceremony of Twelve, you’re be with your Assignment group, those in training.” Page 17-18
Every child will be given a job. The Elder Leader will assign that child, who is a Twelve, has to have a job.
The advantage is no one in the community has to make a mistake. Their placed in a job that suites them.
No planes over the community. There was a plane that flew over Jonas’s community.
“IMMEDIATELY,” The rasping voice through the speakers had said. “LEAVE YOUR BICYCLES WERE THEY ARE.” Page 2
The Elder and the people thought that the plane was flying over the community was a dangerous thing to do. So they had to release him or her.
Advantage: to make sure that no one gets hurt from a plane crash.
I apologize. When someone is late for school, that child would have to apologize for a long time until he or she is done.
“I apologize for my inconveniencing my learning community.” Page 3
In this community, everybody has to be on time; only if they have a job.
Advantage: to make sure that they know what happened just in case if something happens.

    1. They have to share their feelings after their evening meal. The rule of feelings
Quote “Who wants to be first tonight for feelings” page 4
This rule means that every single night the family unit has to talk about their feelings.
There is no advantage to this it’s just boring.

    2. The parents can only have 2 children. The 2 only child rule
Quote “We can only have 2 children” page 8
This rule means a family unit can only have 2 children no more no less.
The advantage to this is you can’t have like 20 children crowding your house.

    3. The parents can only have 1 male and 1 female. The baby rule
Quote “We can’t have Gabe we can only have one male and one female.” Page 67
This rule means the parents can only get one boy and one girl those are the two children they get.
There are no advantages to this.
The parents don’t get to name their child. The no name rule
Quote “We don’t get to name you the elders do.” Page 45
This rule means the parents don’t get to name their child when the child gets given to them they get the name.
The advantage to this is the parents don’t pick a stupid name that will get the kid picked on.
    4. The parents don’t get to choose their spouse. The spouse rule
Quote “Essential capacity to conpeople on the night crew had not even been given spouses because they lacked, somehow, to connect to others, which was required for the creation of a family unit.” Page 7
The adults don’t get to choose who they married the people who run the community choose who they married.
There are no advantages to this.
