Re-read pp 174 to 179 on etext The Giver.
The ending of the The Giver may be interpreted in two very different ways.
Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.
Or perhaps Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him. Lois Lowry mentioned both possibilities but would not choose one as correct.
Choose the ending that you believe, and tell in your own words what happened.
- Find 3 pieces of EVIDENCE from the book to support your idea of what happened from the last chapter.
- Include a quote straight from the book as PART of your evidence. Give the page number of the quote.
- What will happen to The Giver? The Community? Jonas and Gabriel now?
- What are some memories (plural) that you have you would give to someone you care about?
The way I think the Giver book ended is that Jonas and Gabriel died. My 3 pieces of evidence are: People say when they die they see bright lights and that’s what Jonas saw in the town, also they usely say “I saw my life flash before my eyes” and that’s what happened cause all the memories came back to Jonas, and he said: He heard people singing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo. What I think will happen to Jonas community is all his memories will go back to them. If could give a memory to someone I care about it would be peace or Hawaii!
ReplyDelete-Declin :-D
I think Jonas survived because he cans hear beyond see beyond, another possibility is the giver has given a memory from the community of music to get Jonas to carry on with his new life. Quote “Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo”. P – 180. Here is another quote from seeing beyond, He forced his eyes open as they went downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. A memory I would give is a memory of New Years Eve with every one celebrating with friend and families.

I think that Jonas passed out but survived, and the people in the other community took him in to their local hospital. Then he and Gabriel remembered nothing and they started a new life. But maybe they did not live because it says in the book:
ReplyDelete“Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.”
But if I had to choose I would think he lived and stared a new life together with Gabriel.

The End
ReplyDeleteI think the end goes like this Jonas and Gabriel are riding and there are so cold Jonas has to stop and they end up fading away and die of hyperthermia and all the memories fade away from Jonas to Gabriel.
“But the memory faded, leaving him colder than before. If only he had had time to receive more warmth from The Giver before he escaped!” page 178.
Gabriel hugged close before BAM there died.
When they died they were never seen again.
The giver will feel the way that he felt with the last reviver. Jonas will lay there with Gabriel. The community will not feel like a whole.
I would give all heartwarming memories to my love ones.
mercedes
I believe that Jonas and Gabriel died because when he heard music and saw people being happy it could have been memories. These are my 3 pieces of evidence: “I saw my life flash before my eyes”, also he also saw a bright light, and the people listening to music could be a memory. “He saw noth¬ing ahead except the endless ribbon of road unfolding in twisting narrow curves”. Well I think The Giver died, and now the community doesn’t know what to do, also Jonas and Gabriel also died but are living at the same time. I would give my dad a amazing memory of Ontario because he used to come and now he doesn’t because my parents are split.
ReplyDeleteCampbell :)
I think Jonas and Gabriel died because when you died you see a bright light and you also see your life flash before your eyes. I think the giver will go and see his daughter Rosemarie, I think the community will start to see colours and I think Jonas and Gabriel died. If there was a memory I had to give to someone a care about think the memory would be peace on earth.

The giver ending
ReplyDeleteI think that in the end he died because he had hyperthermia and if you have hyperthermia and you fall asleep it is hard to wake up so I thought that that is how he died. Here is a quote that proves it “ Could he hold onto a last bit of warmth?” Page 176.

The Giver How Does It End
ReplyDelete1. I believe The Giver ends when Jonas and Gabriel find a new town and learn more about all the memories that The Giver gave Jonas.
2. “For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing”, “But perhaps it was only an echo”, Behind him, across vast distances of space and time.” Page 180
3. I believe the giver will soon run away when they find a new receiver of memory and the giver would try and find Jonas. I think the community will be scared at first, then be back to whatever their normal is. When Jonas and Gabriel left I think they would find a nice town with no releasing…
4. Some memories I would want to give away to someone I care about would be my first pet, birthday, Christmas, building snowman’s, water slides but most of all memories of love. <3
Abby
1. I think that Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him because in the book, it says: Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing.
ReplyDelete2. Behind him, across vast distances space and time, from the place had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.
3. I think the giver is happy because he probably discovered that he made it to their destination, the elsewhere. Also, he would be happy because he must of died and stayed with his daughter, Rosemary. The community must of doing the ceremony of death by chanting Jonas name loudly, then softly, and then mumbling. They will forget Jonas and Gabriel will continue their lives peacefully. Jonas and Gabriel will continue their lives in elsewhere and live happily ever after.
4. I would give love, happiness and joy to my father.

The Giver How Does It End
ReplyDeletePage 180 For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people sing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo. Page 179 Using his final strength, and a special knowledge that was deep inside him, Jonas found the sled that was wait¬ing for them at the top of the hill. Numbly his hands fum¬bled for the rope.
He settled himself on the sled and hugged Gabe close. The hill was steep but the snow was powdery and soft, and he knew that this time there would be no ice, no fall, no pain. Inside his freezing body, his heart surged with hope.
3. I think that The Giver will end up helping the community with all the painful and happy memories Jonas left behind when he and Gabe left. I believe The Giver ends when Jonas and Gabriel find the house at the bottom of the hill and they learn about what else where is like.
4.Some memories I would give to someone I care would be happy moments like going one a trip to San Francisco with your family and I would give them memories of love. <3

The Giver
ReplyDeleteI think that Gabriel and Jonas lived but all the memories went back to the community because all the memories flashed before him and also he could hear music or perhaps it was only an echo. He community had probably stopped all the sameness and went back to the way it used to be. I would give the memory of being a boy to my sister.

ROWEN:]
I think Jones is alive because Jonas he can see beyond so that means in the community they are changing in a few years all of the communities will end up like that and also the music is coming because the giver said when he reached else where he would seed Jones music and you can’t hear music when you Dead right? Another reason I think Jones is alive is that he said he could feel the warmth of Gabe so that means that the warmth was keeping him alive. This is the Quote that I picked out “Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo”. Page 180. I think that the giver helped the community get back to the normal so the whole community can have lovely Memories. I memory I would give a way to someone I loved would be the time I had the most fun in my life so far.
ReplyDeleteThomas
1)They found the destination where they are going.
ReplyDeleteThey found the red sled where they are going.
The heard music from far away that the giver send it
2)Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.
3)I think what well happen that the community will change and be like a normal community. And Jonas and Gabriel will have died.
4)i would give them happy memories like playing in the beach or spending time with your family.
callista
I think that he did not die. Here is my evidence:
ReplyDelete• Heard people singing. “He heard people singing.” Page 180
• Heard music playing. “For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music.” Page 180
• He could see the community he was entering. “He saw the community he was coming into.” Page 179
I think the Giver will eventually die. I think that the community just keeps on going. I think Jonas and Gabriel will live a happy life. I would give happy memories.
Corin
I think that Jonas died at the End of this book because. He saw the light when he was at the top of the hill. He was seeing memories that the giver gave him and Jonas was not trying to see them. He fell to the ground at the End of the book to.
ReplyDeleteHe forced his eyes open as they went downward, down¬ward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now
Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.
Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled, clutching Gabriel, keeping him safe. The runners sliced through the snow and the wind whipped at his face as they sped in a straight line through an incision that seemed to lead to the final destination, the place that he had always felt was waiting, the Elsewhere that held their future and their past.
I think that the giver will be fine because the giver knows how to deal with things.
I think that the community will freak out when they get all of Joneses memories because they have only had this done one time before and that was with a small amount of memories because a girl killed herself.
I think Gabriel will be fine but I don’t think that Jonas will be fine.
I would give the colure memory to someone I cared about because it’s a nice memory to give to someone I would also give the memory of love to someone I cared about.
I think and believe that Jonas and Gabe have finally met else-were! They have encountered the very spot of where the Christmas memory from the giver has taken place and, once again, is happening. He came upon snow which means it is most likely winter, he just happens to come on Christmas. When he thought he had heard some music playing from faraway (where he came from) in the dark snowy blindness was actually the Giver sending him music telling Jonas he knows he is safe and finally found else-were! When he reached the top of the hill,
ReplyDelete*"I remember this place, Gabe." And it was true. But it was not a grasping of a thin and burdensome recollection; this was different. This was something that he could keep. It was a memory of his own.” Page 178
*He has never seen Christmas before and the book Sais, “This was something that he could keep. It was a memory of his own.”
* he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where fam¬ilies created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing.
I think that the giver helps the community and they all forget, and Jonas with Gabe never return but they both live on happily! If I could give any memory to any one, I would give my sister the first memory of when I first met her, I was baby and she was five. I would give my brother the first memory of when he became obsessed with butts and poop, (when he met his best friend, he still is) and I would give my best friends the memory of when I first played with them (two).

I think Jonas died but Gabriel lived because Jonas heard music, he was cold and he saw his favourite memory. Gabriel didn’t hear music so I think he lived. In the book it said, “Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.” Page 180.
ReplyDeleteI think the music was either an echo or he was just thinking it. I think the giver will still be at the community. The community is still where they were. I f I had to give memories to people they would be the Christmas memory and the sled memory.

How did it end?
ReplyDeleteI think he got to elsewhere and survived because he heard something that he knew to be music, he heard people singing and he knew there was warmth and light. “I remember this place, Gabe”. Page 178. I think the people in the city are going to treat them very nicely and the giver would release himself so the people of his community can have the memories and not give them all back to him so they won’t have sameness. I would give my sister the memory of me having the most fun of my life, like the Valentine’s Day dance at the school.

“Was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing.” The giver said that you would remember all the memories when you die, so that’s why I think they both died. P. 180
ReplyDelete“He forced his eyes open as they went downward, down¬ward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now.” When they say you die you see lights. P. 179
“But perhaps it was only an echo.” P.180. That got me thinking that he might have died.
I think that Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia in the snow. I think that the community was trying to look for him and found him there with Gabriel and then just carried on with their lives and the giver was probably disappointed.

I think the giver ended with Jonas and Gabriel getting to the place that didn’t have any rules, no releasing people and a place that has love.
ReplyDeleteMy evidence:
People singing, music and they celebrated love.
Page 180:
a)For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music.
b)They were waiting for him.
c)He heard people singing.
I think that the community will have to see the memories that the giver gave to Jonas, Jonas and Gabriel will be in a better place and find a new family, and the giver will find a new person to share his memories with.

How do you think the book ended?
ReplyDeleteMy first piece of evidence is the book writer even said quote “He could of died or survived I say he died.” Page number last page
My second piece of evidence is he could be hallucinating, seeing his life flash before his eyes, and going into hypothermia, and freezing to death.
My third piece of evidence is he saw the sled he sled down the hill but in the middle of the hill he stooped and flipped over in to the snow and stayed there in the snow freezing to death.
I think the giver will not help the community with dealing with the memories.
I think the community will beg the giver to take the memories because they are not use to the memories.
I think Jones dies but Gabe will crawl away and find shelter and survive and become the new receiver of memory and find a new town.
The memories I would give are none because I barley have any.

How Does It End?
ReplyDelete1. I think Jonas and Gabe are hallucinating and really are just seeing their life flash before their eyes as they pass into hypothermia. But another thought of mine is maybe Gabe gets saved by someone because in another book named Gathering Blue there is a pail eyed boy that has a lot of the same features as Gabe.
2. His hope diminished further when the sharp, cold air began to blur and thicken with swirling white.
3. I think that the community will be in chaos, the giver will be stressed, and Jonas may freeze to death, Gabe might grow up at another community if he can survive the harsh cold blizzard. What will happen next I do not know but that is up to you to decide?
4. Some of the memories I would translate to people I care about are for my dad I would share the time when I was in Minneapolis at the shark encounter with my mom at the mall of America and for my mom I would translate the time when I was at Sandi ago with my uncle and dad by the beach.
Connor
How does it End?
ReplyDeleteMy idea is that Jonas and Gabriel survived the storm of the blazing snow and reached Elsewhere on the sled.
“We’re almost there, Gabriel” Page 178
Evidence 1. Jonas had hope in his heart. Usually when you have hope, it encourages you to move on. If you didn’t have hope, you will give up.
Evidence 2. When Jonas had hypothermia, he had a tiny shed of warmth. He gave half of it to Gabe, and the other half to himself. If he hadn’t had it, he wouldn’t go a little farther.
Last Evidence. He heard people from Elsewhere. They were singing and had music, too. The people in Elsewhere were waiting for Jonas and Gabriel. If Jonas didn’t here singing and music, it might of make Jonas give up because there were no people in Elsewhere.
I think The Giver survived when Jonas ran away with Gabriel. I guess the community didn’t notice that Jonas and Gabe ran away until Jonas’s Mum and Dad figured that he and Gabe ran off into the night.
If I could give somebody I care about, I would give a happy memory about the time my sister was born. Another one will be when in tennis, I beat my hardest enemy.
Kaitlyn
1. I believe that Jonas did live to reach his goal of getting to his final destination. I think that Jonas escaped slyly from his community at night and was determined to reach his goal. In every day that had passed, it had become more difficult for Jonas and Gabriel to stay alive. I think that Jonas did stay alive. I assume so because when Jonas had hypothermia he said that he tried hard and kept himself from sleeping in the soft snow. He also said that he could see the sled on the top of the hill, so if he had not lived he would not be able to see it. When Jonas said that he reached the sled with Gabriel, he could feel it rushing down the hill, blowing the ice in his face and feeling the happiness and joy that he and Gabriel had reached their destination. He also said he could remember the place where the sled was from one of his memories.
ReplyDelete2. Author’s quote: "I remember this place, Gabe." Page #178
3. I think what will happen to The Giver is that he will help shape the community to make a better place, full of good, bad, warm and cold memories. I believe that if The Giver shares the last memories he has with the community, the community will find out that a life without memories is more painful than a life without pain. I believe that Jonas and Gabriel will spend their lives in the new community and finally have a life full of love, caring, and more memories in his new community and have a family that loves them both. I also believe that the old community will not choose a new giver because they will make memories of their own.
4. The memories I would give to someone are the memories of going to the beach in the summer and swimming in the ocean. I would also give the memories of spending time with my family at Easter and going to the Vancouver Aquarium and staying overnight there with my class.
