How Does It End? Your Opinion...

Re-read pp 174 to 179 on etext The Giver

The ending of the The Giver may be interpreted in two very different ways.

Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.

Or perhaps Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him.  Lois Lowry mentioned both possibilities but would not choose one as correct.

Choose the ending that you believe, and tell in your own words what happened.
  1. Find 3 pieces of EVIDENCE from the book to support your idea of what happened from the last chapter.
  2. Include a quote straight from the book as PART of your evidence.  Give the page number of the quote.
  3. What will happen to The Giver? The Community? Jonas and Gabriel now?
  4. What are some memories (plural) that you have you would give to someone you care about?

Rule#8: You May Lie.

In Jonas' new work package, one piece of paper outlined the 8 rules he had to live by.  Rule#8 stated "You may lie."

Why does Jonas find the instruction about lying so disturbing?  3 Sentences minimum.  (What would you feel/think if you were given this "permission"?)

Giver Post#2: Funky Fruit

"But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit had-well, this was the part that he couldn't adequately understand-the apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air...Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere."

What do you think happened? If the apple did change, then how, in your opinion did it change? What was different? Why? Explain your thoughts using any evidence from the book (page number) about what you think happened.

The Giver - Rules

In Jonas's community there are many rules that the citizens must follow.  Using only the first two chapters of The Giver:

  1. List at least five rules that Jonas and his community must live by and give them your own title or name.
  2. Copy an exact quote from the first two chapters of The Giver for each rule in your list which shows where the author has mentioned itInclude the page number for the quote.
  3. Explain in one or two complete sentences what the rule means in your own words (Don't tell why you like it/don't like it).
  4. Tell what the advantages of each rule could be in a community.  How could this rule benefit your life or world?
Do all your answers in complete sentence answers  in Microsoft Word and check it with WORD TALK.  Use all your COPS skills and include as many dressups as you need to make your answers as interesting to read and as descriptive as possible.
