Once again the author, Kenneth Oppel, has selected certain words to help the reader get a feel for the mood of the chapter. Consider the following passage from the text:

Complete darkness did not greet us this time, but pale light, revealing a chamber even bigger than the last. Dark, silhouetted shapes hunched everywhere, as if ready to stand or spring. Our torch beams danced about nervously. Against the far wall was a bank of floor-to-ceiling windows, all iced over. Looming darkly in the corner was an enormous machine, bent like a gargantuan crone, peering out the window. It looked to me like a telescope. (p. 202)
  1. What images do the words in bold create in your mind?
  2. What is the mood these word choices help to create (If this were a scene in a movie, then how would you feel watching it?).  You may need to use a dictionary to help you understand some of the words.

  1. The shapes
The bold face makes me picture, opening a door, coming to a gray half light room, hunched people in the shadows, bright light dancing on the shapes. A big, huge thing, like a type of telescope in the corner peering out of a wall made of windows. It makes me feel scared yet curios, I want to go on /read more, be in that very room.

  4. I think that when they go back on the ship that they will find a nother dark room and that the roof will be hunched over so they need to crouch in that room. There torch beams dance around nervously around the room. A looming dark corner crossed mats line of sight and thought it was a machine.

  5. The words in bold face create a picture in my mind of a dim light shining on the old air ship with dark shades hunched everywhere in the room. As the torch beams went from side to side it felt like there was something there in my mind. The looming darkness with the giant machine made my mind create a giant dark shape in the corner.
The mood these words help to create is mysteries and scary. If this were a movie scene I would feel scared and curios of what would happen next.

  7. The Bolded words create images that give me ideas and thoughts that tell me the mood about the people and part of the story. It gives me extra information about the book. These Bolded help me create and if it was in a movie, I could imagine how they would feel in that scene.

  8. They create in my mind dark creepy characters, like in a haunted mansion. Movies like that make me all tense. It makes me feel all scared, like someone is creeping up behind them, and about to attack. It also makes me feel like someone is behind me!

  10. I think that it looks like this there is a telescope with a big a machine under and it is looking out of the window and scanning the sky’s for the jelly fish things. The bolds word mean to me that the author was trying to get a good picture in your mind and it is a word that is going to make a lot a detail to your picture in your mind. I kind of think that there should be a movie I don’t want there to be a movie because all of the chatters would not look like what I think they look like. Why I want there to be a movie because it would be neat to see what other people think what all of the chatter look like and what people visualize in their minds.

  11. In my mind complete darkness means a fully dark room. Dark silhouetted shapes hunched everywhere would make me think they were going to jump out at me. Danced about nervously would mean to me shadows in the dark trying to scare me. Looming darkly means someone would be following me to see what I would do next, and gargantuan crone to me sounds like a giant big scary monster. To me gargantuan crone means in my mind big scary creatures coming at me and trying to haunt me. If this was a movie I would think it would be kind of interesting and scary but I think it would be a very cool movie I would want to watch it if this was a movie.

    1. I liked what Abby did because she put in a lot of detail and she put a lot of work in to it her paragraph. I liked the descriptive words she used in her sentences like committed. Abby did a good job with her paragraph because she took her time, was really creative and put as much detail as she could.

  13. The images in my head that the boldface words create are Matt, Kate, Naderia, and Hail, are entering a dimed room with machines everywhere. There torch lights scattering the room looking for gold or maybe riches but what they found was not gold but a wired machine that looked like a telescope. Matt thought would be of god use Hail was not interested! The mood word choices help me create a scare felling but a little exited and nerves. If it were a movie I would love to watch it!

  15. 1. The words in bold created spooky pictures of all of the machines and taxidermy that have not been used or alive in decades. As I read the passage I felt as if I was in the same room, feeling the same emotions as the main characters in the story.

2.As I was reading the passage the words that were in bold helped create scary, dark and ghostly moods in my mind.

  16. The word complete darkness crates in my mind nothing to see it is just plain black. The word dark silhouetted shapes hunched everywhere in my mind shows little scary creatures. The word danced about nervously crates in my mind someone who dose not want to do something. Looming darkly crates in my mind someone who is fallowing people without telling. Gargantuan crone crates in my mind is a figure that is hunched over.
I would love to watch this movie because I like adventure and a bit of scaryness.

Looming darkly feels like something staring behind me. Gargantuan crone feels like an old witch.

  28. The words in bold face make me feel lonely, scared and anxious. The images also create the feeling that I’m in a small space. The words “gargantuan crone” make me think that there is a huge creature looming over me.
